Surgical Management of Pulmonary Metastases of Colorectal Cancer

The prognosis of colorectal cancer after primary surgery is related to subsequent or concurrent distant metastasis and local recurrence; at least one-third of patients will develop metastases/recurrence, the most common sites of metastases being the liver and lung. Unfortunately, there is no definitive successful chemotherapy and target therapy regimen for patients with lung metastases, although pulmonary metastasectomy has seemed to have a positive effect since its introduction in the 1980s. In addition, no clear prognostic factor of survival following pulmonary resection has been identified. Therefore, in this study we examined the outcome in patients who underwent pulmonary metastasectomy and attempted to identify potential prognostic factors.
